If you read any job description online or on news papers, one word often is highlighted: MULTITASKING. What this means is, you need to be a person who is able to do many things simultaneously.
But is that efficient??
I definitely do not think so. Not only is it inefficient, it kills your motivation slowly. In the beginning of my career, one of the managers told me, ‘Deepak, you need to multitask. You do not have enough time to spend on one activity. Do many things at once.‘ I followed him; he was a great manager, but somehow the meaning of multitasking has been adulterated.
Imagine you have 5 business ideas or 5 ideas about an article you write about. What would you do? Write them simultaneously or run the businesses in parallel. Couple of years back, I thought the same. I would start writing 10 different articles at the same time because I had developed this crazy idea of multitasking and it was etched into my brain.
The Result?? Nothing.
Although I could start 10 different articles, I could not complete any of them; on time. Never. I thought there was something wrong with me. How can Managers and big companies be wrong? They have more experience than my age; so I compromised. I completed the articles; however they were not up to the standard/quality I expected them to be.
Same thing with reading articles and books. I bought tons of books to read; clipped numerous articles that I wanted to read in Evernote.
Nothing. Nil. Zero.
Then one day in the summer of 2014 I read a quote some where on the internet: Do one thing and do it well.
Tinnnnggggg…..
That light bulb moment!
I had found the secret to success. FOCUS.
My new keyword for life, my mantra. FOCUS. Do one thing and do it well.
After I adopted this, my life has changed. Since adopting this mantra, I have completed reading more than 10 books, wrote more than 200 articles for my blog, performed well on my job, have a good quality of life etc.
Are you stuck in the rut of life?? Multitasking??
You should change that because it does not serve good to anyone; yourself, your company, your family, your career.
Think of this: Why are rocket scientists, World famous writers, World Leaders so well respected and earn well?? They do, what they do, best; they are good at one thing that no one else is as good.
The mantra for this year: Do one thing and do it well.
